Hard Freeze This Weekend

Just a quick blog to update you on some rather chilly nights we will see the next few nights. Today (Friday) should be mostly sunny and mild. A good day to be outdoors, albeit a little breezy at times. 

Saturday will start off chilly. Temperatures could below freezing in some spots. It won’t get very warm during the day. And it will feel even colder than the thermometer says. Much drier air will be moving into our area during the day. That will make the wind feel very cold. Add to that, clouds and showers will develop during the late morning and afternoon.  Our atmosphere will be unstable enough (coupled with the cold dry air) that I wouldn’t be surprised if a few showers have some graupel (snow pellets).

It’s worth noting that the European model is one of the wetter forecasts. Other forecasts only have a few showers in the northern Panhandle.  

The dry air that moves in on Saturday will allow the temperature to drop considerably Saturday night. Everyone will see freezing temperatures by Sunday morning. Some of the colder locations could see temperatures down to the mid or lower 20s. The ice could be thick on the stock tanks. 

Palm Sunday will be nicer than Saturday. But look for more freezing temperatures by Monday morning. 

Next week is looking mostly dry and mild, with daytime temperatures around 70 from Tuesday onward. There is a very low chance of showers on Wednesday and next weekend, but not enough to alter your plans.  Right now Easter looks like a high around 60 with a chance of showers.

It has been a wet November.  Multiple storms delivering over an inch of rain this month.  Here's some precipitation observations for the month of November so far. Officially at Spokane Airport, 3.57" has fallen in November, which is the wettest November since 2006.  The all-time wettest November was in 1897 with 5.85". For Deer Park, 5.35" of precipitation has fallen in November, which is just shy of the 5.45" in 2006. But as we know, these kinds of things tend to average themselves out.  While we've been very wet for the past 30 days, the eastern part of the US has been very mild.  Short pants on Halloween.  Wildfires in the northeast.  And now we're going to see the pattern reverse.  The West will dry out and the East will be in the news with winter weather. Is Summer Over? - Update

After our cool weather of late, summer feels like it’s over. But don’t despair.  If you're a fan of the hot weather, it will return for the holiday weekend and beyond.  First, we’ll have one more storm system to contend with. As I said in the last blog, this next weather system isn’t at all like what we saw on Friday. Instead, this storm will move by along the Washington-BC border.  This pattern typically brings more wind than rain for our area. And any rain we do get would be Tuesday morning and on the light side.  Winds will likely gust in excess of 30 mph on Tuesday.  There’s a feature worth noting on this upcoming system. Take a look at the temperature (red) and dew point (black) forecast for Deer Park.  Notice how quickly the dew point drops on Tuesday. Rain Chances for Sunday - Update

 Did anyone notice something a little odd with the weather this morning?  Or was it only me?  Northwest winds were blowing in the tree tops right at sunrise, which is pretty rare at this time of year.  Clearly something was going on.  Turns out a very weak, dry cool front pushed into our area from the north this morning.  It was just a glancing blow, so no big cool down.  But those northwest winds brought drier air in with them, keeping the higher dew points to our south.  Why do I bring this up?  This little event will keep our temperatures a little cooler on Saturday.  Mid-80s instead of near 90F.  And it shouldn't feel muggy either. Then our much anticipated weak weather system will move in from the Pacific.  The models continue to go all over the place on just how much rain (if any) we can expect.  Here's the latest GFS model (which is once again on the wet side) And the European model continues to be on the drier side...
