Multiple Chances of Rain

We’re near the end of yet another mid-spring dry spell. Deer Park airport has had only 4 days of rain so far this month, compared with a normal of 11 days. We’ll likely add a few more days this month, but overall we’ll fall short of an average May. 

Rain should start Monday evening and continue into parts of Tuesday. Don’t expect a lot of rain from this first round. Something around 0.10”. 



After that, we’ll see our typical May pattern set up. A nearly-stationary low to our south with the potential for bands of showers to rotate around it.  Notoriously hard to predict.  Here’s our chances of rain for the next 10 days.


 At this point the best chance of this bringing rain to our area is around Friday.  But we’ll have to wait a few days to see how things shape up.  Here’s the current forecast for rainfall amounts.  Possibly around a half inch.


The first few days of June look like they will be warm and dry.  But another round of showers is possible, starting around June 5th.

The outlook for the month of June is for a warm and dry one.  This could mean good weather for putting up hay early.

The End is In Sight

We're currently in the middle of a rather unusual heat wave at the end of summer.  And some records could still be reached.  For those who aren't a fan of the heat, there's good news:  an end to the heat wave is in sight. Here's the somewhat odd weather map.  There's a skinny but strong area of high pressure over the Western US that extends up into BC and the Alaskan Panhandle. A weak low off the Washington coast is sending waves of moisture into our area at times.  This caused all of the clouds last night along with a few showers and thunderstorms.   Meanwhile, the eastern US is still experiencing fall-like temperatures.  Low temperatures in the 40s dipped all the way south into North Carolina this morning.  State College, PA has already had 3 nights in the 30s. Showers and Storms this Week

The last week of July is (on average) the hottest week of the summer.  We are looking at 90s Mon-Thu this week, so this may be following the pattern.  The longest day of the year is June 20th, with 16 hours of daylight in Spokane.  By the end of July, we've already lost just over an hour of that.  Not that the length of day is the only factor of hot weather, but it obviously has an effect.  The days noticeably get shorter in August, losing about 3 minutes of sunshine each day. We were talking in the last blog about the potential for showers and thunderstorms this week.  As usual, things are becoming a bit clearer on timing and coverage.   Afternoon and evening thunderstorms will increase over the next few days over eastern Oregon, slowly creeping north each day. Rain Returns - Update

The computers are remaining true to their word.  Our long dry spell will be ending on Wednesday, with the potential for a nice rainfall.  More showery chances of rain then continue through the weekend. First I’ll show you the average of all of the computer forecast rainfall for Wednesday. 0.1” around Spokane, with 0.25” north and east of the metro . Here’s a few of the individual computer forecasts.  The US GFS model gives around a half inch to parts of northeast Washington. . The UK is similar to the blend of models. The European AI forecast is a bit more generous with the rainfall.  And lastly the European model predicts over an inch for parts of Ferry and Stevens counties.  There could be some thunderstorms on Wednesday as well.  So everyone should get a little rain, but some folks could get more.
